Membrane organisation: novel techniques to follow lipids rafts and responses to oxidative damage

Abstract

The very heterogeneous, but non-random, arrangement of lipids and proteins in cell membranes are of major scientific interest as organization within the cell membrane is crucial to the function and signalling of the cell. Changes to the organization of the lipids and proteins following attack by reactive oxygen species could have roles in cell apoptosis, cancer and ageing. In this project the focus will be on developing novel neutron scattering methods, in addition to other biophysical characterization techniques, to follow changes in membrane organization with time during oxidative events.
