Speech is a uniquely human behaviour that is performed by controlled movements of the speech articulators in the vocal tract and larynx. Much is unclear about the neural organisation of speech production. This project will use repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) to map out the neural organisation of speech production. We will examine the effect of rTMS to parts of primary motor cortex, such as the lip, tongue, and larynx areas, on the acoustic representations of speech. The project will employ computational methods to link acoustic variation as a result of rTMS to particular neural substrates involved in speech articulation.
